A Universal joint is a mechanical device used to connect two shafts whose axes are not aligned angularly. Available in alloy steel, stainless steel or special materials, the single joint configuration can accept up to 25 degrees of angular misalignment where as the double joint designs can accept up to 50 degrees of shaft misalignment.
Model designs can include needle bearings, hardened bushes or plain pin, depending on torque and speed requirements. Bore sizes from 4mm to 50mm as standard. Other bore sizes including keyways are available on request.
Universal joints are particularly efficient at transmitting torque through greater shaft offset angles than a standard shaft coupling design can. ABSSAC supplies miniature and industrial sizes, using standard cast model numbers up to specifically designed machined units.
Recently, one of ABSSAC’s Universal Joint products has just passed extensive testing connecting an electric motor to a compressor for use in large cold store. As part of a national refurbishment, 303 Stainless steel was utilised to accept both the arduous environmental requirements, but also a possible static torque of up 9150Nm (81000lbin). Each U-Joint was 100mm (4”) in diameter and 270mm ( 10.6”) long and capable of accepting up to 35 degrees of angular shaft offset. ABSSAC was chosen as the preferred supplier on cost, delivery and performance. As standard we offer the following types of universal joint that can accomodate bore sizes from 4mm to 50mm bore sizes. Other bore sizes including keyways are available on request.
The G and GD series plain bearing universal joints are for medium to low speed, high torque applications where a robust joint is needed.
The H and HD series needle bearing universal joints are ideal for higher speed applications, and when a large amount of angular offset is needed.
The X and XD series of stainless steel universal joints are made entirely of AISI 304 stainless steel, ideal for applications where the corrosion resistance of stainless steel is needed.
The G and H series listed above, are also available with a quick release mechanism. This allows connecting shafts to be removed with ease.
Extendable Universal Joints are ideal for applications where axial extension is required. The plain bearing version is well suited for medium to low speed, high torque applications.
